music notes on piano, please help?

okay so i know im going to prob. confuss alot of ppl, and if i do im terribly sorry lol. i took course my 9th and 10th grade year of high school,, and i had the best teacher ever, he was very understand and he knew i loved music just i didnt get how to read music notes. So he did something for me so i could still play music without reading notes. what he did was i got the song i wanted to learn, and where it would read out the music notes under the word, he would right down 3 4 1 2 4 ( which was the number of the key ) from left to right. like so from left to right the first key would be 1. the second 2, third 3, and so forth. I havent talked to him in ages, so i have no clue how to get in touch with him, and he’s not a music teacher anymore. if you know what im trying to say, or what im talking about, then do they acturally make music books like this for ppl who cant read music notes that well?? thanks so much, would love to help u out if u have a question of your own.
