How do you sight-read sheet music?

Tanith asked:

I’m in a chorus and am soon going to be trying out for a more advanced chorus. I could never really read music and now I’m trying to learn before it’s too late. If you could give me any useful tips on singing or reading music, I would much appreciate it. Anything would help me!

Violin/Guitar Playing?

DamienNyC asked:

My Little Brother is taking violin lesson and my mother wants me to learn with him. I was just wondering how easy/ newbie friendly the volion is.I play the Electric guitar as a hobby and I’m decent at it are there any similarities between the two? I never learned how to properly read music I always read guitar tabs from Guitar Pro/Ultimate Guitar. Do I need to learn music or is there a form of violin tab? Any tips or good sites I can go to?
Thanks in adv!

Best way to learn how to sight read music?

Vespera Carlin asked:

I have perfect pitch (not bragging) been playing piano classically since i was 2, and then when i was 10 i broke off into music recording and studio composition for the last 5 years. Now i want to play the harp for orchestra and as use that as my solo instrument (like hendrix is to guitar), but i can’t sight read to save my life. I could tell you what key you’re playing in when i hear it, and i can play scales in any key on any instrument, but i can’t sight read at all. I don’t know what a coda is, i don’t know rests, slures, ties. i took a theory class last year and failed every test. I can write a little music, but that’s about it. What are alternatives to learning how to read, besides a teacher and a class (both of which i can’t get at the moment) Are there softwares that could teach me, and if so what are they?
thank you

thanks for the advice, and yes perfect pitch means i play by ear. i learn songs by ear, and i remember things by ear. but that doesn’t help when you have to play something you haven’t heard!
