How to improve my sight-reading skills on the flute/?
I am a college student whose sight-reading skills are far behind my other abilities on the flute. I have problems reading both the notes and the rhythms. How can I practice to improve these skills? I’ve always had a hard time reading music. I always feel like it takes me much longer to make sense of a measure than it does other people and I find myself having to stop and break the measure down in order to understand it (which I obviously don’t have time to do when I’m sight reading). I know I also have problems forcing my eyes to read ahead. I feel like when I do read ahead, I end up skipping notes because I start playing the notes that I am reading ahead.
Can you suggest any specific etude books that I can use to sight read from?
