People who won’t learn to read music?

Tags: , , , , ,

del_icious_manager asked:

Is it me or is there an ever-increasing tide of people posting here wanting ‘the notes’ to this piece or that (usually the same pieces!!)? Whenever I can be bothered to reply, I encourage these people to learn to read music and discover the wonderful world that awaits them on the other side.

I don’t believe it’s very hard to learn to read music if one does it in a methodical way and puts some effort in (I’m no genius and I did it quickly enough). Why, then, are there apparently so many people who seems steadfastly to resist (or even refuse) to learn to read music? Is it part of the epidemic of laziness we see every day in “please do my research/homework for me” or “I can’t be bothered searching for this on the internet myself – please tell me …” questions every day in here? If so, I despair for the forthcmoming generation of couch potatoes.

What are your thoughts? How can we encourage people more to learn this not-so-difficult task? Should we have a section policy of refusing to type lines and lines of ‘notes’ in response?

Violin sight reading help?

Tags: , , , , ,

Brandon asked:

Hi! I’ve been playing the violin for about 2 and a half years and I’m pretty all right. The only thing I really lack confidence in is my sight reading. I have a really hard time sight reading music for some reason. I am able to play the piece when i practice but it’s hard for me to play it right there when someone gives a piece to me. Are there any tricks or websites that help to improve your sight reading for violin? Any scales or something on sheet music I can practice for sight reading. I take the suzuki method book and they have the fingering (example: 1, 2, 3) below the note which is what I usually use to read my music (unfortunately). Please help! Thanks!

What is a good learn-to-read-music book?

Tags: , , , , ,

wewantfringe asked:

I already know how to read music, but my boyfriend wants to learn and I don’t have lots of time to teach him, and since I learned how to when I was 8 I don’t really remember how it was taught, I just know how to read it already.

he wants to learn like, dynamics, notes, the grand staff, anything a 6th grader could read, pretty much. Nothing too deep into theory, maybe some triads and seventh chords if anything.

ANYWAYS! I want to get him a decent book for Festivus that can help him learn to read music, or at least the basics so I can fill him in and help him with the rest.
Does anyone know of any good books that aren’t directed towards children and are easy to learn from?

Thanks!

Reese B asked:

hi there, im 24 years old and i started playing the keys at the age of 3. (without formal training), i’ve been playing for 21 years now and i have developed the play by ear method. i can identify notes and chords by listening to a piece, but i feel incomplete because i havent figured out reading sheet music. i need advice from different instrumentalist around the world, should i learn how to read music? i fear that if i learn how to read music, i might decrease my musical feeling. (because i always trusted my ear and my heart when it comes to playing). what should i do? thank you in advance
