Should I learn piano or guitar?

Tags: , ,

Kate asked:

I’m 15 and I really want to take up a new instrument as a hobby, but I can’t decide between guitar or piano. I’ve been playing the trumpet for five years, so I can read music and am good at sight reading. I’m a fast learner, but am sometimes impatient and get frustrated kind of easily. I have a piano and my dad has a guitar so I don’t have to worry about buying either. I took piano lessons for a couple of years when I was younger and can play a couple of songs by memory on piano, but I don’t know any technical stuff like chords or anything. I’ve never played guitar before. Also, my dad plays both so he would be able to help me along the way. Which one should I pick??
Thanks for the advice, everyone! I’m going to try both at the same time, but focus on guitar.

How to memorize music?

Tags: , ,

puregenius_91 asked:

How exactly am I supposed to memorize the music?
because some songs (piano), I know almost too well…. Like, I don’t even need to think. My hand does all the work. I don’t know the names of the notes i’m playing, I don’t know where my hands are at that particular moment, where they’re supposed to go, my brain just does all of the playing, like I’m in autopilot or something…. I think that’s what some people call muscle memory… is that the right way to memorize music?

Or should I be actively trying to remember my music, it’s phrasing, dynamics, etc? Or shouldn’t I memorize at all, and just learn to sight read really well, so that I can play, memorize, or no memorize?

Sorry to bother you, I’m just starting out in piano, and I’m teaching myself… don’t have anyone to ask around here… thanks a lot.
