The Oxymoron Is The Key. asked: My worst trait in sight-reading is following the key signature. I’m so bad at sight-reading that by the time I’ve reached a note in the key signature, I either stop for 3 seconds to think whether it should be sharpened or I continue making a wild guess as to whether it is sharpened or not? Do you get my problem now?
Can anyone help me sight-read better with key signatures?
Thanks for all your answers, guys and gals! Your advice is really useful for me!

outofcontrl asked: is there any place i can get music with the letter name above the note or something? I way I play piano, its just easier if I know the letter since my sight reading isn’t great on piano (im a violinist). Pachelbell’s Canon in d would be great, thanks!
While we’re here, any song suggestions for a beginner? I can play things like For Elise pretty easily. thanks

Taylor asked: I took choir all through high school and I do tons of musical theatre; I’ve always excelled in these activities only because I have perfect pitch….
I absolutely want to do more singing, but I can’t read music! I mean, I don’t know much at all about music, other than the terms and lingo. I can find the key and tell you the note, but it takes me a few seconds to calculate it, and I want to be able to grab a piece of music and be able to sight read it!
Would taking a ‘music theory’ class in college be a wise idea? Or would I be completely lost?

Sgt. Pepper asked: I’ve played the violin for five years, so I know treble. My friends all told me I’m really good at piano (I learn songs by ear) and can play fairly complicated things (though I can’t read music). I’ve decided I finally want to give it a go, but where do I even start? It’s so overwhelming! Do you have any tips for a beginner? Thanks.
